Alan Dale
Military Scout of Hengarreg
Boy from the provinces; child of the forest
May 11th, 23 years old
History:
Born in the west, Alan's background is one of stone and cold. His earliest memories that are not of the forest are of harsh winters and the silent grimaces of his family, frostbite and failed harvests. Caer Llwyd did not give Alan a soft upbringing, and he was at home in the forest before he could talk. The second son and fifth child (with two of his sisters deceased) of a devout and taciturn man of middling means despite his constant hard work, Alan grew with a strong sense of duty to his family and to the old gods, but also with a unspoken yearning for more than life in an outpost could give him.
When Alan was nineteen his father (already an old man, by the standards of the settlement) died and his brother disappeared a few months later – the gossips of Caer Llwyd whispered that the Small Folk had taken him, and Alan kept his own private thoughts on his brother's fate to himself.
Alan sacrificed to the gods, petitioned the overlord, exchanged the family land for three horses (his sister having been married for five years and his mother choosing to stay and live with her), and began the arduous journey to the capital.
Upon arrival he sold one horse and enlisted in the military, where his skill in woodcraft, physical endurance and performance quickly let him to a role as a scout.
Meinol Morfa was the first place where Alan properly laughed and the first time that he was truly warm, and although his nature did not entirely shift, Alan began to grow more comfortable with life in the wider world and all that that entailed.
Physical Attributes:
Pale and with nondescript brown hair, Alan is sturdy without being stocky – a life of constant physical exertion has rendered him extremely fit and whilst he does not have the strength for heavy sword work, there are few faster and few more adept at movement through the rougher terrain of Hengarreg. His economy of movement lends him a grace that is not always obvious when he is away from the forest, his most comfortable environment.
Sexual Orientation and History:
Alan can very effectively tell the tales and sing the songs of love and sex which are a part of the lore of Hengarreg, but he himself has never been moved to such things. He was betrothed to a woman named Ellen in Caer Llwyd, but dissolved the contract before leaving. Even in the military Alan generally has little to do with sex.
